1. INTRODUCTION

A robot system is a standalone robot that is configured with its own controller, is programmed, has configured I/O system of its own. This single robot system can perform tasks on its own after being programmed.

The controller plays a very crucuial role here in making a single robot system, as this is the brain of the robot system. In this tutorial with ABB robotstudio we will be using IRC5 robot controller.

3. ATTACH VACCUM GRIPPER TO ROBOT FLANGE

A vaccum gripper is a tool that is used in industrial robots or CNC machines for the purpose of holding / picking up an object. These vaccum gripper work on the principle of pressure difference.

Vaccum gripper can be simply attached to a robot flange inside ABB robotstudio, Click import library from the home tab and further select user library option to select the user defined components, then inside that choose myNewTool (vaccum gripper).

Then, in order to attach the gripper to the robot flange, right click on the myNewTool option in the Layout section and choose option "Attach to". This function is used to attach the child object to the parent object. You can select the robot's model name to attach gripper to it. Now click "ok" in the update dialog box that will appear.

2. CREATING WORK CELL

An ABB robotstudio work cell is basically a virtual environment provided which enables a programmer / engineer to program and model a CNC robot machine, accompained with that it also allows him/her to digitally model the robot using constraints that are valid in real life, hence giving a direct insight into the functioning & operation of the robotic machine and ultimately making CNC programming an easy task.

Now creating a workable workcell in ABB robotstudio requires an engineer to first create a workstation which basically consists of IRC-5 controller, FlexPendant, tools, positioners, However we can start by following some basic and necessary steps such as: including the robot pedestal, the robot model, conveyers, and saftey fences.

Inside the workcell, first we can import the robot pedestal and then the robot model - IRB 2600 from ABB library of Home tab. This model has got a handling capacity of 12kg to 20kg. Now position the robot from thw bottom and top of the pedestal and also set the home position of the robot. Then import the conveyor - I from the import library's equipment section of the home tab, also you may position and orient the conveyor by right clicking on it's name in the layout section.

Further for a better modelling and visualization of the work station digitally, various other accessories or equipments can also be imported like plastic storage crate. It can be imported from the home tab's import geometry section.

Fences are used for the purpose of saftey during working in real world and they can be modelled in the ABB work station also. The saftey fences are used around the robot work cell area to prevent un-authorized entry of people or material while the robot is in operation. These fences can be added into the work cell from the Import library section from the home tab. The fences can be positioned to assumed positions in the work cell by right clicking on the fence name in the layout section and choosing the position option.

These machines provide a great deal of convenience in modern-day industries as they significantly increase the production and decrease the costs involved, helping a business to scale and spend on research and development further. Accompanied with this, there are certain tasks involved in different industries like Arc Welding that necessitate involvement of humans in dangerous situations and hence they are needed to be provided with extra protection gear, apart from that they would also require continuous health checkups ensuring that they are healthy and fit for working. All these things add up a significant cost to the business and hence a little capital is left for other progressive things for the business. However, the CNC machines are here to save. 3. HOMING ROUTINE PROGRAMMING

Now, we are going to see how we can program a CNC robot using ABB robot studio software (simulation & offline programming). A robot can be digitally modeled and programmed using the ABB software. The CNC machine will make use of the computer program consisting of various modules, routines & instructions to drive itself. Here we will specifically look into steps to add a homing routine to CNC machine for robotic arc welding. A homing routine is basically a set of data declarations followed by a set of instructions used to implement a task. The concept of homing routine is used in various technological areas like Robotics, Navigation, Automated machinery, etc. We will look here from the perspective of robotics. In this, a target system accomplishes a task as directed by the homing routine and then returns to a predetermined position / coordinate which can be referred to as "home" here. Basically, a CNC robot will make use of an array of sensors / actuators / servo motors to determine its position relative to the "home" and move on different axes (x-y-z) to do the task. For that, we can go to the home tab in ABB software and get access to the CNC robot, and then in the freehand group of the home tab top section we can simply click on the Jog Linear to select the Linear mode. Now the robot can be moved using the cursor along coordinate axes in a linear fashion. This will fix the "home" position of the robot, and now the target position / coordinates can be added to the homing routine. Inside the homing routine various things can be done like we can add instructions to move the robot (for example: moving the absolute joints), set the outputs etc. Furthermore, similar instructions can also be added by clicking on the Add Instructions button present on the bottom left corner of the FlexPendant window.

1. INTRODUCTION

Butt joint welding refers to a type of welding in which two metal pieces / parts / strips are joined together using welding. In this welding method, the edges of the metal pieces are brought into close contact, and heat is applied to melt the edges. A filler material may be added to reinforce the joint, depending on the welding process being used.

Now, there can be multiple ways of welding that can be used to join these metal parts together such as : Arc Welding, Resistance Welding, Solid-State Welding. However, here we will be discussing Arc welding by CNC machine.
